K-9 Unit
Mission Statement
The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit will provide assistance and support to all patrol units within Jefferson County as well as other law enforcement agencies as requested for the purpose of searches, narcotics detection, back-up, and any other needs that may arise.
K-9 teams may be deployed anywhere within the county and will remain available to provide assistance during their regular and off duty hours. They will also support the patrol units in emergency calls for service including building searches, officer assistance, and narcotic related calls for service.
The primary responsibility of the K-9 team is to assist the patrol and Specialized units with searches for persons and of vehicles meeting the K-9 search criteria; however, a handler may be temporarily assigned to other duties as required such as community awareness events and other special events. Each K-9 is assigned a handler, who cares for the K-9 and conducts special training with his/her K-9. Some handlers are assigned as K-9 trainers.
