When first responders arrived, it was discovered that there were nine workers trapped on the platform of the burning rig. The rig was in the salvage process. Port Arthur Fire Department Personnel assessed the scene and requested additional assets. Other agencies that responded include the Port Arthur Office of Emergency Management, Port Arthur Police, General Land Office, Jefferson County Precinct 8 Constable, Jefferson County Office of Emergency Management, United States Coast Guard, Acadian EMS and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Marine and Aviation Units. With assessments from the ground, water and air, Information was given to the United States Coast Guard. The Coast Guard conducted an aerial rescue of all 9 workers who were trapped up on the platform. None of the workers were injured. Due to the inaccessibility of the platform, a smoldering fire continues. The Port Arthur Fire Department will conduct a Fire Watch to maintain the scene until they can confirm that the fire has burned itself out. The Coast Guard and the General Land Office surveyed the scene and determined that there were no environmental impacts to the area.
