Man Caught Attempting To Deliver Contraband to Federal Prison
On 08/26/2021 at 3:30 pm, a call was dispatched to 2053 Hillebrandt Road, Beaumont, Texas, in reference to a subject trespassing on the property and the landowner having the suspect detained. This land backs up to the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Patrol, Livestock and Narcotics Deputies responded to the call and quickly arrived in the area. The land owner advised he had witnessed the suspect walking through his property toward the Federal Prison carrying a back pack. The suspect had concealed the back pack and attempted to flee from the area prior to being caught. The suspect was identified as 19 year old Jose Anaya-Briones, from Mexico. A Texas DPS Trooper arrived to assist by translating Spanish.
Deputy Crain and his K9 partner Duc began a search of the area to locate the backpack that Anaya-Briones had been carrying. The search covered an area of approximately 120 yards in thick, high grass and underbrush. K9 Duc searched and discovered the back pack that was concealed under some grass and in muddy water. The back pack contained bundles of cell phones packaged in camouflaged wrappings and a bag of marijuana.
The Warden and investigators from the Federal Prison were notified and they arrived at our location to assist. The packaged cell phones as well as the suspect’s phone were seized by the Federal investigators from the prison.
Jose Anaya-Briones was arrested for trespassing and possession of marijuana and booked into the Jefferson County Correctional Facility. The investigation continues. This was a cooperative effort between the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Texas DPS, Texas Games Wardens and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
A special appreciation to the landowner for being ever vigilant in contacting authorities when witnessing illegal activity.
