Identity Theft Suspect In Custody

LOCATION: IH-10 East at Smith Road On 12/20/18 at 1:25 p.m., Jefferson County Deputies observed a vehicle speeding over the limit and making an unsafe lane change. They stopped the vehicle, a 2015 BMW, and made contact with the driver and sole occupant. The Deputies smelled the odor of marijuana inside the vehicle. Upon questioning, the driver gave Deputies a fake name and date of birth. During a search of the vehicle, Deputies discovered numerous credit/debit cards not in the driver’s name and a large number of high dollar items purchased in high end retail stores. A search of the vehicle yielded a Florida driver’s license with the fake name that she had given. The driver confessed that was not her real driver’s license. She was placed under arrest for the traffic offenses. It was also discovered that she had a warrant out of San Antonio for Fail to ID. She was transported downtown for questioning. Investigators determined that she was in possession of cloned debit cards and her real identity is Latisha Lak, age 19 from Houston, Texas. Lak was taken to the Jefferson County Correctional Facility and booked for Fail to ID-Fugitive (Class A Misdemeanor) and Fraudulent use or Possession of Identifying Info (Felony 3). The investigation continues. This is a reminder to everyone to monitor your bank accounts and run your credit history periodically.
