Mission Statement of the
Sheriff's Reserve

The Reserve Division of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office will support all aspects of County Law Enforcement by providing trained, qualified, state certified individuals to assist each division of the Sheriff's Office. Professional service and protection will be afforded each citizen of Jefferson County by Reservist in this Division.

About the Sheriff's Reserve

Organized in 1989, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Reserve is comprised of individuals from throughout the community. These men and women are dedicated to providing the highest quality reserve law enforcement to the citizens of Jefferson County.

Supervised by Deputy Chief of Law Enforcement Tim Smith, this resource of highly trained individuals assists the paid Sheriff's staff in areas of Patrol, ID Bureau, Criminal Warrants, Criminal Investigation, Air Patrol, K-9, Beach Patrol, River Patrol, and Training. Assistance is also provided to the Bailiff Division of the Sheriff's Department on an as-needed basis. These officers are part-time, unpaid, fully-certified Texas Peace Officers, who assume the same duties as regular paid Deputies while on duty.

Reserve Deputies must complete the same training as full-time paid Deputies. Each is a TCOLE certified Peace Officer and must complete the mandatory 40-hour in-service training every two years. Firearms qualifications are met twice each year - once in full daylight and once in a low-light/night environment. Continuing education is provided each month at the scheduled Reserve Meeting with special topics presented as opportunities arise.

Reservists come from all walks of life. Some have previously worked as regular Peace Officers and many eventually move from Reserve to full-time, paid status with local departments. Most are involved with private full-time employment outside the department and contribute hours during their off-times. Reserve Deputies must work at least 16 hours per month, though many submit far more hours than are required. During 2003, Reserve Deputies worked over 6,900 hours, resulting in considerable savings for Jefferson County taxpayers. Reservists are also on-call 24 hours per day for emergencies and special assignments.
